Industrial Chillers for Most Applications
There are three different types of Portable & Packaged Chillers: air-cooled, water-cooled or remote condenser also referred to as a split system. These three types of chiller systems refer to the type of condenser used to ultimately reject the process heat. Portable Packaged Chillers are useful for small process loads or where special process fluids, flows, pressures or temperatures are required. They also are ideal for test applications and for temporary use.
An industrial central chiller is a piece of equipment used to provide cooling for multiple processes. The chiller incorporates both the refrigeration circuit and controls and is installed in conjunction with a pumping system. The pumping system can be integral to the chiller but often the two items are installed separately. Central chillers are used for higher cooling capacity requirements and offer a cost effective means to cool multiple processes without requiring a single portable chiller dedicated to each process. Central chillers are also highly energy efficient utilizing special compressor technology like oil free designs. The capacity of these systems can range from 10 to 250+ tons (35 kW to 879+ kW). The chillers are typically modular and can be added to a system in the future to expand the cooling capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions About Water Cooled Chillers
A water cooled chiller transfers process heat first to refrigerant, then to a separate stream of condenser water that circulates between the chiller and an outside heat rejection device such as a cooling tower, adiabatic fluid cooler, or once-through city water connection. The condenser water enters the chiller at around 85°F under standard conditions, picks up the absorbed heat and compressor work, and leaves at roughly 95°F before being returned to the tower for evaporative cooling. This second loop is what gives water cooled units their efficiency advantage, since rejecting heat to evaporating water consumes far less compressor energy than rejecting it directly to hot ambient air.
Long chiller life depends heavily on condenser water that is treated to control scale, corrosion, and biological growth. Recommended ranges generally include pH between 6.5 and 8.5, total hardness under 200 ppm as calcium carbonate, chlorides below 200 ppm, and total dissolved solids managed through tower blowdown. Open evaporative loops also need a biocide program to control Legionella and other waterborne organisms. We strongly recommend partnering with a qualified industrial water treatment provider because poor water chemistry is one of the most common causes of premature condenser tube failure, lost capacity, and unscheduled service calls.
Process water cooled chillers and comfort water cooled air conditioning equipment look similar at a glance but are engineered for different duty cycles. Comfort cooling equipment is sized around 45°F, leaving water for human-occupied space, while process chillers commonly run from 20°F up to 65°F and are built for continuous full-load operation, repeated start-stops, and direct integration with manufacturing equipment. Using a comfort unit on a process load often leads to short cycling, control instability, and reduced compressor life, while using a process chiller on a comfort load works mechanically but is usually more equipment than the application actually requires.
The water cooled chiller itself is the refrigeration package: compressors, condenser, evaporator, controls, and starter. It does not reject heat to the atmosphere on its own. Pairing it with a cooling tower, an adiabatic fluid cooler, or another open- or closed-loop heat rejection device completes the system. Thermal Care supplies all of the major components, including the cooling tower or adiabatic cooler, the condenser water pump skid, and the chiller itself. This lets us match flows, temperatures, and pressure drops across the loop, rather than mixing components from multiple manufacturers and hoping field commissioning resolves any mismatches.
Industrial water cooled chillers commonly remain in service for 20 to 25 years when condenser water chemistry is well-controlled, refrigerant charge is maintained, and the unit is operated within its design envelope. Heat exchanger tubes are usually the longest-lived major component; compressors are most often the first wear item that gets rebuilt or replaced around year 12 to 15. Documented annual maintenance and prompt response to alarms, vibration changes, or efficiency drift extend service life noticeably. Our parts and service team supports installed equipment well past 20 years in the field, including refrigerant retrofits where applicable to the unit.
